Quarantine authorities have taken emergency measures after avian influenza (AI) antigens were detected at a meat duck farm in Jangheung, Jeonnam-Gwangju.

The Central Disaster Countermeasures Headquarters for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza announced yesterday (November 5) that H5-type avian influenza antigens were confirmed at the farm, which raises approximately 22,000 meat ducks.

The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency is conducting a detailed inspection to determine whether it is highly pathogenic, and the results are expected to take one to three days.

The headquarters has dispatched a first-response team to the farm to control access, carry out livestock culling, and conduct epidemiological investigations.

A 24-hour temporary travel ban has been issued from 11:00 p.m. yesterday to 11:00 p.m. today (November 6) for Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated City, duck farms affiliated with the same company as the affected farm, livestock facilities, and livestock vehicles.

The headquarters emphasized that farms must strictly adhere to quarantine rules, such as controlling the entry of vehicles and personnel and conducting daily disinfection.

It also urged farmers to immediately report even minor suspicious symptoms, such as decreased feed intake as well as an increase in deaths or a drop in the egg-laying rate.

Previously, highly pathogenic AI occurred for the first time this winter season at a laying hen farm in Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi Province, on November 3, prompting quarantine authorities to strengthen quarantine management for poultry farms and livestock facilities nationwide.
